The Sinfonieorchester Basel celebrates its anniversary of 150 years! And this with nothing less than a symphony that wants to depict the "world as a whole". Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony spans a huge arc from the realm of plants, animals and people to boundless love, as perhaps only in the afterlife can be found. It is a dream of the world, said Mahler's confidant and conductor Bruno Walter, and dreaming around 1900 also included trivialities, echos of tavern music or marches and a cuckoo song: such contrasts! After the admonishing alto solo “O Mensch, gib acht!” (roughly = “oh mankind, beware”), Friedrich Nietzsche's words are followed by a carefree choir of angels, and a final section that leads us onto the end, or beyond…
