Cardillac cannot part with his art: the jeweller is compelled to kill anyone who buys jewellery from him. E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novella Das Fräulein von Scuderi, one of the first German crime novels, served as source material for Paul Hindemith’s 1926 opera, which is a milestone in the development of music theatre. A whole century after its premiere, theatre- and film-maker Kornél Mundruczó stages this thriller about obsession, control and self-alienation. Fabio Luisi conducts this ice-cold, dazzling orchestral score.
