I am in the process of commissioning the building of a modern full-range clarinet d'amore (in G). This instrument was used predominantly as a harmony instrument from the 18th to 19th centuries but became obsolete prior to the 20th century, possibly due to the dominance of the basset horn. The interesting features of this instrument, at least in the case of some models, were the slightly bent neck, a narrow bore and a globular bell (like that of the cor anglais), all contributing to its gentle, covered sound. With a fully chromatic modern key-work and extended range to written low C (sounding G2) as well as the physical and acoustic characteristics described above, the clarinet d'amore will be a very exciting addition to the clarinet 'arsenal'! Your donation will be acknowledged with a tax deductible receipt and a copy of the first ever CD of historical and contemporary music especially written for clarinet d'amore, recorded on the new instrument.
